About Stupas

Physically, a stupa is a Buddhist structure that has been in existence for over 2500 years. Spiritually, a stupa is the embodiment of the Buddha’s enlightened mind. It is a radiating presence that transmits blessings to individuals, the surrounding area, and the world.

In the presence of a stupa you can make prayers for your own spiritual aspirations, such as happiness, health, prosperity; for the well being of others, especially those who are sick, troubled or deceased; for peace on earth, and, of course, for the ultimate goal of enlightenment.

By approaching a stupa with the altruistic intention to be of benefit to others, the blessings multiply for ourselves and all sentient beings. It is said that by honoring a stupa, we honor our own potential for enlightenment.

By circumambulating-walking around in a clockwise fashion-and creating prayers, we keep the image of enlightenment at the center of our attention.

By making offerings of what we hold dear we cut through our own self-cherishing. All these activities become the virtue that helps us achieve our goals and moves us forward on the spiritual path.

At KPC we are committed to building stupas around the world for the benefit of all sentient beings, In the West there are very few places where people can go to refresh their spirit and awaken and enliven their innate wisdom nature. Stupas, with their spiritual power, fulfill this need.

The first stupa built at KPC's Poolesville Maryland USA temple. There are now 26 stupas at Poolesville temple.
